The mission of the Central American Oncilla Project is to conduct research and support conservation of oncillas in Panama and Costa Rica.
Central American oncillas are likely a unique species separate from other species of little spotted cats or tigrinas in South America. Very little research has yet been conducted on this species to investigate its distribution, abundance, and risk of extinction. Thus, timely research and conservation of Central American oncillas is vital.
The Central American oncilla project recently published one of the only recent records of this species in Panama, from just below the top of Panama's highest peak, Volcán Barú. Our goal is to conduct further research in Panama and Costa Rica using camera trapping, noninvasive genetics, and interviews with local people, and to engage local communities in efforts to conserve this unique small cat.
